Sound causes the ear drum to vibrate, and the vibrations are amplified by the middle ear ossicles which, in turn, vibrate against the oval window causing pressure waves to be sent through the fluid-filled cochlea. Nerve endings are stimulated by these waves, and send nerve impulses to the brain.
